I went to the Mass for Pope Francis at St Joseph's Cathedral in Sofia on Mon 28th April. The Archbishop, the Papal Nuncio and goodness knows how many of the great and the good showed up in this small church. Catholics are a tiny minority in Bulgaria. The Mass was mostly in Latin. Which a working majority of the multicultural congregation in the capital might still understand.
After Mass I picked up a copy of the homily in Bulgarian and English. Thank God that I did not understand the original blathering in Bulgarian. Though I guess it is too much to expect Uncle Ted McCarrick, Father Ricca, "Don Mercedes" Inzoli, Father Marco Rupnik, etc in the final eulogies for the dear departed. Stick to Pope Francis' work for peace, that 2019 Document on Human Fraternity, dialogue, etc.
Though the sermon did mention the Bulgarian Pope. Who??? That would be John XXIII who spent years in Bulgaria as a Vatican representative. He has a statue outside the Cathedral.
Thank you for this breakdown. I did not watch the Mass. But I believe it was Pope Francis who started not issuing official Vatican documents in Latin. As you know, it is the very precision and “deadness” of Latin which makes it historically reliable.
Havent watched the requiem Mass (too ill), but even the Easter Vigil Mass was all in Latin, too, if you noticed. Who knows who’s really running things there now?
Vibe shift.

Amazing!
Great analysis.
Is there a stream where we can watch the whole thing without any commentators waffling over the top, do you know?
It does seem the main stream Vatican News (no language designation) works
I watched the Vatican News stream, and there were commentators in the beginning but the commentary stopped when the Mass started.
Thanks for the review of the funeral liturgy. I appreciate! May Pope Francis through the mercy of God, rest in peace!
